Chase Sapphire Reserve® vs Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
Both are premium Visa travel cards with no foreign transaction fee, built for people who fly often and want travel credits and lounge access. They land on the same shortlist because they take opposite approaches to the same job. The Chase Sapphire Reserve charges $795 a year and answers with a deep stack of category credits and 8x on travel booked through Chase Travel. The Capital One Venture X charges $395, earns 2x miles on everything, and keeps its credits short. The real question is whether you want to work a long list of specific credits or keep the math flat.

Choose Chase Sapphire Reserve®
Choose the Sapphire Reserve if you'll actually use the credits and eat out often. The card posts a $300 annual travel credit, up to $500 a year on prepaid stays through The Edit ($250 each half of the year), a $300 dining credit through Exclusive Tables, $300 on StubHub and viagogo, up to $300 in DoorDash credits, plus $120 each in Lyft and Peloton credits and up to $288 for Apple TV+ and Apple Music. Used in full, that stack runs well past the $795 fee. On spend it earns 8x on travel booked through Chase Travel, 4x on flights and hotels booked directly, and 3x on dining worldwide, so heavy restaurant and travel spend adds up fast. The signup bonus is bigger too: 100,000 points (about $2,000 toward travel) after $6,000 in the first 3 months. The trade-off is you front the $795 and have to remember to use narrow, brand-specific credits.

Choose the Venture X if you want a lower fee and simple math. It costs $395 a year, and the $300 annual travel credit plus a 10,000-mile anniversary bonus (worth about $100) roughly offset that fee on their own. It earns 2x miles on everything, against 1x on the Reserve's non-bonus spend, so you don't have to sort purchases into categories to earn well. Booking through Capital One Travel gets you 10x on hotels and rental cars and 5x on flights. The bonus also asks less up front: 75,000 miles (about $750) after $4,000 in the first 3 months, versus $6,000 on the Reserve. You give up the Reserve's larger credit stack and its 3x dining rate, but you keep more of the fee and skip the credit tracking.

If you'll work the credit stack and spend heavily on dining and Chase Travel, the Sapphire Reserve earns its $795; if you'd rather pay $395, earn a flat 2x, and not chase credits, the Venture X is the easier card to keep.
